Alcohol Statistics in Europe and measures

According to the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence, in the United Kingdom, which is the author of some recent alcohol statistics in Europe: "7% of men and 2.5% of women over 18 years old or older get drunk at least once every week".

Also, average annual per head beer consumption of over 160 liters, puts the Czech among the heaviest alcohol consumers in the world.

The statistics are from the recently completed study Alcohol Consumption and Alcohol Problems amongst Men and Women in the EU Countries, supported by the European Commission.

It contains recommendations for much needed standardized measures of alcohol consumption and alcohol problems for use in European alcohol statistics and research. It is amongst the most recognized papers that mention that alcohol causes depression and/or makes depression worse, and makes it more likely that a person would commit suicide.

A recent survey showed that American teens are using more hard drugs, but less tobacco and alcohol than the young teens in Europe, according to a study released during a World Health Organization conference.

According to these recent statistics the European Union decided to take decisive measures against harmful alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence. These measures include strong alcohol policies. They are required because Europe is already the heaviest alcohol consumer region worldwide, with alcohol consumption per person over twice the average: 11 liters of pure alcohol per year.

Some successfully implemented measures are:

  • seat belt requirements
  • zero tolerance laws
  • increased enforcement
  • increased public education
  • information on the dangers of teen drinking

All these recently contributed to the downturn in drinking and accidents, and also to the drop in consumption of alcohol in statistics.
